Hydropower

line

Water falls from the sky onto the ground as rain, some part of which infiltrates into the ground and other part flows down over the ground to form river streams. The mechanism of Hydro Power Plant is to harness this natural phenomena produced by the sun to generate the electricity, the product of gravitational force of flowing or falling water, through water turbine and generator. Flow of a river varies significantly in quantity depending on the weather at the upper stream of the river, and also depending on the seasonal conditions. There are two types of hydro power plants. A hydro power plant that uses natural flow and elevation drop of the river is called "Run-of-the-river" hydro. The other type, that uses an artificial water reservoir or regulating reservoir, in which water is stored by dam structure crossing over the river, is called "Dam" type. Water reservoir of larger scale makes possible to produce larger power and/or to generate power even in dry season. Therefore, there are many hydro power stations with large dams across the world. Such hydros contribute economic development in their countries and regions. NEWJEC Inc. provided consulting services in three large hydro power projects in Indonesia in the last century. These projects have been, still are contributing the economic development of Indonesia. Saguling Hydro Power Project (700MW) and Cirata Hydro Power Project(1,000MW) built on Citarum River, the biggest river in West Java, are responding to the increasing electricity demand in Jakarta, Bandung and other big cities in Java Island. Bakaru Hydro Power Project (126MW) built on Sadan River on Sulawesi Island is providing electricity to Makassar City in southern Sulawesi.

NEWJEC Inc. was founded by a group of engineers who designed and built Kurobe Dam, one of the most famous dams, and the highest-altitude arch dam (186m high), in Japan. NEWJEC is proud of its 50-year dam engineering experience. NEWJEC is also dedicated to the protection of global environment: "together with natural environment" is in our company motto. Large dam projects may sometime adversely affect natural and social environment, and rigorous environmental assessment is crucial to a success of the project. NEWJEC has many experiences in environmental assessment as well. We would also like to emphasize that a hydro project can be a renewable energy project. Run-of-the-river type hydro power plants are a case in point: as they have less effect on environment and are actively developed in the world today. In Madagascar NEWJEC provided consulting service, field survey/engineering design/construction supervision, for Namorona Hydro Power Project of this type. The project is providing electricity to Fianarantsoa City, which is a sub-capital 500km away from the Capital of Madagascar, Antananarivo.

We the engineers in NEWJEC are ready to go anywhere in the world upon request to provide first-class engineering services for hydro power projects.
